Tararua had 3 finalists in National Champion of Champions!!!
Tararua Squash Club had 3 players travel to Christchurch over the weekend of 1st to 3rd November to represent Central Districts after winning the Central Districts Champion of Champions in their grade.
Sam Holtham was top seed in a hard F Grade 8 draw, which saw the top 6 players all within 100 points of each other on the Grading List. Sam played awesome in his semi-final. He found himself two games down, then Match Ball 12 down, but started playing some great some great squash to win in 5 sets. In the final Sam played Rhys Jennings from Wellington, he fought hard all the way, and played some great shots. Unfortunatley Rhys took the match 3-1. Sam should be proud of the way he played.
Clint Bennett was 6 seed in a tough 8 draw. He faced the 3rd Seed in his first match, and won convincingly in 3 sets. His Saturday morning match was against a player who took out the 2nd seed, again Clint dominated the game and won in 3 tight games. That win earnt Clint a place in the final against a very experiened youngster, Teuara Hemopo (who is now graded D1) from Taupo. Clint fought hard, but struggled with the low hard shots coming from his opponents racket and went down in 3 tight games. Clint has only been playing competively for one season, so has done extremly well to get to this level.
Luke Jones was top seed in the B Grade Draw and played well in his first two games to find himself in the final against Waikato's Montell Whatangi, Luke won easily in 3 sets to take the B Grade Title. This has topped off a great season for Luke, who is now A Grade. He also recently got renamed for the NZ World Junior Boys Squad, which will see him train hard for a spot in the NZ Boys team travelling to Namibia, South Africa in August 2014. Well done Luke.

Condensation and Wet Walls Finally Resolved
For the past few years we have battled with a moisture issue when the peak of the season is in fill force.
We have installed 3 heat pump units, which have definitely warmed the complex, however during the winter when moisture in the air from players, mixed with cold plaster walls due to poor thermal insulation, causes condensation or "sweating" (a film of water on the playing surface of the walls).
During what is usually the busiest time of the year for squash players the wet walls and skidding ball caused by this issue can make the game vary from frustrating to almost unplayable. It is equivalent to playing tennis on a rainy day.
This is where Tararua Squash asked Sedco Engineering for advise on how to best solve the problem. For which they came up with the ideal solution. To erect an insulated dummy wall over the existing concrete block exterior walls, with water heating coils placed between the two walls and powered by a Daiken Heatpump Hotwater System. They suggested the system as they are the most energy efficient way of heating water to a relatively low temperature required for this type of heating.
Once the Dummy Wall was installed, Pink batts were placed in and the finishing Hardi-Plank exterior Cladding was erected and painted to finish off the project,
This was completed just in time for two big events being held at the club, The Central Districts F Grade Superchamps and then the Tararua Open Tournament the following weekend. So the system certainly got put to the test with a lot of squash activity going on.
We were expecting some teething issues, however, the result was fantastic and the club received a great deal of positive feedback from all the players. Everything ran very smoothly, and it has made the game far more enjoyable for everyone playing at our club.
Tararua Squash Club was lucky to receive generous support from the Central Energy Trust towards the cost of the upgrade, and is very grateful for their assistance. The ongoing benefit will be felt for many years to come for the whole squash community.
Jones wins National Title
Luke Jones capped off a great 2014 season when the PNBHS student took out the NZ Junior boys title in Auckland.
He won the final beating fellow NZ team-mate Chapman Kutia from Gisborne in a tough four sets. Jones has came through an incredibly tough summer of training towards selection for the New Zealand Junior Boys' team that travelled to the World Junior Championships in Namibia. His improvement saw him soar up the grading list, well into A grade and achieve selection in the final team of four players. His fine season is now capped off with this victory in the boys' under 19 national championships.
The 'Most Improved awards' went to Kaitlyn Watts and Luke Jones again - both of SquashGym Palmerston North. Watts, at 13, is the country's youngest A Grader. Her determination and work ethic are a shining example to players of all ages, and if her rapid rate of improvement continues she will be a valuable asset for New Zealand Squash in the years to come.
Coached by Kashif Shuja, this is the third major title to come to the strong Palmerston North club this season. Jones’s NZ junior title comes with Mike McSherry’s NZ Masters mens title and the Central Districts Womens team, who beat Auckland for the NZ Teams title, won by CD for the first time in 42 years and completed an unbeaten season for Central in all rep matches.
NZ Under 19 Boys Championships: (3) Luke Jones bt (4) Chapman Kutia 11-5, 11-5, 3-11, 11-5.
Thanks to Waireka Community Trust
A huge thanks to Waireka Community Trust, we have replaced the old wooden windows upstairs and in our Changing Rooms to Aluminium Joinery. The old wooden windows were in desparate need of replacement and we could have not replaced them without the Waireka Community Trust. Come in and have a look. Thanks Waireka Community Trust.

2013 AGM
Friday 6th December saw our Final night of Club Night for 2013 and our AGM. We had a exhibition match between the clubs top two players Luke and Justin before a quick prizegiving and AGM.
It was a fantastic turnout from the members supporting the AGM, and we welcomed Kyle Dench, Brent Woodmass and Angela Pyne onto the 2014 committee. Unfortunately we did loose one committee member, Gordon Herbert, who retired from the committee after over 35 years service to Tararua Squash!!. We celebrated Gordies time and effort he has given the club over the many years, and he assured us he will still be round to help out when needed.

At our AGM held on December 7th, Phil Bollard was presented with Life Membership.
To give you an idea on Phil's involvment with the club, he has been a member for 30 years, and has spent many of these years on the committee. You can see Phil in alot of the old committee photos up on the wall at the club.
Phil is currently our Mens Club Captian and does a wonderful job.
Phil was shocked to receive his Life Membership, but it was well deserved. Good on you Phil.

Rangitikei Gnome Challenge
Team Tararua, all set to take on Rangitikei for our gnome. Unfortunately Gnome didnt quite make the bus trip home.
Each year we have a Challenge against Rangitikei Squash Club for the Gnome Trophy.
The first year 2011 saw Rangitikei visiting us at Tararua where we played either Hi Ball or Squash, and Tararua won the Gnome Trophy and bragging rights for the year.
2012 saw us travel to Rangitikei with Gnome, but he must have liked their hospitality too much and has made Marton his home for the year. Bring on the 2013 Challenge held at Tararua!!!!
